At intervals between 1980 and 1998, Hassel Smith sent personal papers, photographs, publications, exhibition announcements, and documents to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Smith was invited to contribute his papers to the public domain by Paul Karlstrom, who established the West Coast Archives of American Art for the Smithsonian Institution in 1973. The Hassel Smith Papers, Archives of American Art, were curated in 2008 by a grant from the Getty Foundation, and are today available for research online.
